A few clear signals tell us a panel is overdue: breakers that trip whenever you run the microwave and the AC together, lights that flicker or dim, a panel that feels warm to the touch, scorch marks or a burning smell, or a fuse box instead of breakers. Many older Rogue Valley homes are also simply out of space — every slot is full, with nowhere to add a circuit for an EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, or remodel. Most single-family homes are well served by a 200-amp panel — it’s the modern standard and handles a typical mix of HVAC, kitchen, laundry, and an EV charger with room to spare. A 400-amp service is for larger or load-heavy properties: a home stacking an EV charger, hot tub, heat pump, shop, and pool at once, or an agricultural or commercial building. We run a load calculation and tell you honestly which one your home actually needs — we won’t sell you a 400-amp service you’ll never use.
If your home was built before the 1990s, it may have a Federal Pacific (FPE) or Zinsco panel. Both are known for breakers that can fail to trip during a fault — meaning the one device meant to prevent a fire may not do its job. Many insurers now refuse to cover homes that still have them. If you have one, we’ll show you exactly what the concern is and replace it with a modern, properly rated panel.
For most upgrades we handle the entire process so you have a single point of contact: we pull the permit; replace the panel, meter base, mast, and weatherhead as needed; coordinate the disconnect and reconnect with Pacific Power (or Ashland Electric in Ashland, and Consumers Power in parts of Josephine County); and meet the inspector on site. A standard residential upgrade is typically a one-day job once the permit and utility coordination are scheduled.
